New Publication on 21st-Century History and Civic Education Challenges

We are proud to announce the publication of a new joint study by Dr. Richárd Fodor, Dr. Áron Fekete, and Dr. János Setényi in the latest thematic issue of Janus, an international, peer-reviewed academic journal (Q4 ranking).

The title of the article is: "Development of Information Literacy in History and Civic Education as a 21st-Century Leadership Skill"

The study explores the impact of the 21st-century information revolution on education, particularly the rise of WEB 2.0 platforms, MOOCs, and artificial intelligence, which have increasingly blurred the lines between the digital and analogue worlds.

The authors emphasize that history and civic education have gained renewed significance in this context, as they can play a key role in developing information literacy, digital citizenship, and media awareness among students.

The article also investigates the essential competencies future educators and community leaders will need in this rapidly evolving environment. Through a comprehensive content analysis of scholarly literature and international strategy documents – including EU and global reports – the authors identify key challenges and goals related to these fields. One of the main outcomes is the introduction of a competency network model, which visually maps the interconnections between information literacy, media literacy, and digital citizenship within history and civic education.

The study highlights that since the 2010s, the importance of information and media literacy has grown significantly, calling for teacher training institutions to adapt and evolve in response to both technological and societal changes.
